The Autumn School in European Studies at Villa Vigoni is coordinated by Villa Vigoni and the Fondazione Treccani Cultura, in close cooperation with Fudan University (Shanghai), Europa-Universität Flensburg, Università del Salento, Universität Hamburg, Università Alma Mater Studiorum di Bologna and Università Bocconi. This joint institutional network offers an interdisciplinary platform for high-level dialogue among international scholars, experts, and students. Framed within a post-global and increasingly multipolar world order—where nations actively redefine their sovereignty, technological independence, and geopolitical priorities—the program systematically examines how external crises and major global conflicts have acted as historical catalysts in shaping European integration and institutional transformation.
Tracing this historical lineage, the Autumn School is structured around three core chronological and thematic pillars:
- Post-WWII Reconstruction and Institutional Foundations: An analysis of the post-1945 historical, political, and socio-economic imperatives that laid the groundwork for the first European Communities, giving birth to the institutional framework of Western Europe.
- The Post-Cold War Order and Systemic Expansion: An examination of the geopolitical shifts following 1989–1991, investigating the deepening of integration via the Maastricht Treaty, the creation of the Single Currency, and the institutional shift leading to the eastward enlargement of the Union.
- The War in Ukraine and the Future of the Union: A forward-looking critical reflection on how current conflict in Eastern Europe forces a re-evaluation of the EU's geopolitical footprint, its political capacity, and the structural necessity for further enlargement and institutional reform.
By combining long-term historical analysis with contemporary international relations, the initiative critically explores how internal national demands and shifting global dynamics intersect to redefine the future of multilateralism and European political institutional architecture.
